Course Structure

Weeks 1-2
Observe & ResearchLectures on the evolution of Space Architecture and ideas about Space settlement. Familiarization with the Space environment, your potential sites, and mission and system constraints.

Weeks 3-4
Orient & Define  With guidance from mentor, converge on your most important design questions and requirements. Define your project's core challenge and test-drive approaches.
End of Week 4
Guest Keynote A lecture and Q&A by an industry expert.
Weeks 5-7
Decide & Design Focused design critiques, technical consultations, and refinement sessions. Guest critics provide specialized expertise in life support, structural systems, human factors, and operations.

Weeks 8-9Act & PresentPortfolio-quality deliverables with presentation coaching. Final critique with panel of industry professionals.

End of Week 9
Final ReviewThe studio concludes with presentations to a panel of industry professionals including practicing Space architects and industrial designers, aerospace engineers, mission planners, and researchers.

Session Scheduling
Flexible Deskcrits
A few days per week will be available as flex time for 1:1 deskcrits between mentor and student. Students decide the time based on their schedules each week and seamlessly book online.

Group Pinup
Once per week, at a set time that everyone can attend, we organize and present our work to our peers and engage in constructive discussion.

What You Need to Bring
Time Commitment
To get the most out of the studio, about 8 hrs/week of project work outside of hosted sessions is recommended.

Design Tools
Proficiency in at least one 3D design tool is required. Students are free to use the tools they prefer or already know, so long as they can make dimensioned 3D designs and make images and line drawings from them. Students are encouraged to use Rhino3D, a powerful yet accessible CAD program, as their core tool. Rhino3D offers a fully-functional, free 90-day trial which will cover the duration of the course
