Course Structure

Weeks 1-2 Observe & DiscoverStudio orientation, curated resource library, 1st assignment, and introductory lectures. You will become familiar with the Space environment, research your potential sites and their possibilities.

Weeks 3-4 Orient & Define  With guidance from your mentor and discussion with peers, you will converge on your site, program, and most important design questions. You’ll define your project's need statement and try various approaches.

End of Week 4 Keynote A lecture and Q/A with an industry expert.

Weeks 5-7
Decide & Design You’ll develop your physical design. This period is driven by design critiques with your mentor. You will have a 1:1 with a guest mentor and present your progress to a panel with expertise in spacecraft systems and their operation.

Weeks 8-9Act & DeliverYou’ll turn your focus to how you want to explain and represent your original project. You’ll produce portfolio-quality deliverables within your technical abilities and recieve presentation coaching.

End of Week 9
Final ReviewThe studio concludes with presentations to a panel of industry professionals including practicing Space architects and industrial designers, aerospace engineers, mission planners, and researchers.

Organized Sessions
Flexible DeskcritsTwo days per week will be available as flex time for 30 to 60-minute long 1-on-1 deskcrits between mentor and student. Each week, you’ll decide the time based on your schedule and seamlessly book online.
Group PinupAbout once per week, at a broadly agreeable time, we organize our work-in-progress and share it using FigJam, a digital whiteboarding tool that allows for real-time collaboration. You’ll have the opportunity to comment on your peers’ work in a constructive manner and learn through them.

Studio Hours Sessions always fall between the hours of 7am and 12pm PT (UTC -7). Most sessions start at 8am PT and deskcrits will be offered during these studio hours.

What You Need to Bring
Time Commitment To get the most out of the studio, about 8 hrs/week of heads-down project time outside of hosted sessions is required. More is recommended. In general, you get out what you put in.

Design ToolsProficiency in at least one 3D design tool is required for most students. Students are free to use the tools they prefer or already know, so long as they can make dimensioned designs and make spatial images and drawings from them. There are many tools available that meet these criteria, many of them free. Students looking for a powerful yet accessible tool widely used across the design industry are suggested to use Rhino3D. Rhino3D offers a fully-functional, free 90-day trial which will cover the duration of the course. Software tutoring will not be provided.
